QUESTION?

Does the amount of exercise a young man does have a bearing on the quality of his sperm?

ANSWER:

Recently published research seems to show that exercise does improve the quality of sperm. Here is a summary of the conclusions.

Men who spend more than 20 hours a week in front of the television tend to produce sperm of lower quality than those who stay away from the small screen, according to an American study published last Tuesday.

American researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston analysed sperm samples from 189 young men (aged 18 to 22) and asked them specific questions about their life styles (exercise, diet, TV viewing).

The group who spent over 20 hours watching television had a concentration of 44% lower than those who spent the shortest time in front of the screen. Another important factor is physical exercise, according to a study published on-line inspermatozoa the British Journal of Sports Medicine (publication of the BMJ group).

The men who exercise for 15 or more hours a week have a concentration of 73% higher than those who exercise less than five hours a week. However, the study stresses that in all the cases examined, the concentration of spermatozoa spermatozoa was sufficient for the conception of a child.

The quality of sperm seems to have been deteriorating for several decades in many of the Western countries, but the causes of this weakening are not known with certainty. Some scientists suspect that a sedentary life style and lack of exercise are partly responsible for this decline.

According to the authors of the study, “the impact of different types of physical activity on the quality of sperm needs to be assessed, since earlier studies suggested contradictory effects of exercise on the characteristics of sperm”.
